Linux Infrastructure Technician

Terms of Employment
Ad Hoc, this is a position for a contractor who already has existing clients. We may call on the contractor from time to time.

Role Summary
This role offers variety and challenge in proving desktop support to our clients, in Linux-based environments.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in a Linux network support role—web servers, mail servers, SAMBA, DNS, firewall.
  • Education in a computer-related discipline. Alternatively, an appropriate combination of education and experience would be considered.

Responsibilities/Expectations

  • In consultation with the client, define system needs and specifications for new implementations based on analysis of business needs regarding work flows, access, information and security
  • Installation of software including Linux operating systems, web servers, mail servers, SAMBA, DNS, firewall.
  • Daily administration of Linux servers.
  • Daily administration of backups and monitoring server performance logs.
  • Support and troubleshooting of hardware and software for Linux servers.
  • Professional Development –utilize information from web-based resources, colleagues, technical training courses and conferences, and computer-related publications to assess new products and developments in the IT industry

  • Knowledge on supporting Linux Operating with an emphasis on RHEL and debian
  • Web and e-mail tools: Troubleshooting Mail Transport Services email flow be able to understand and manage configurations primarily on exim and sendmail , postfix knowledge is a plus.
  • Familiarity on web hosting administration on apache based web servers either by command line tools or graphical environment for single websites (c-panel/webmin) or multiple hosts (whm)
  • Experience on troubleshooting e-mail log error (e.g. syslogs, Panic error logging) and interpret the Mail statistics to determine misusage.
  • Experience on the procedure to follow when servers are being blacklisted, how to verify the correct configuration of name servers and MX records and overall DNS Health.
  • Familiarity with spam tools such as SpamAssasin or Clam
  • Familiarity with IMAP tools such as Courier or Dovecot
  • Experience on safely upgrading not only the operating system and patching its tools but also updating hosting services add-ons such as Joomla or WordPress
  • Desirable experience with administration of web hosting related services such as databases (postgress/mysql) or additional server services (such as FTP and SSH host access)
  • Knowledgeable on the creation and maintenance of shell scripts and installing ssh keys to safely execute automated (Cron Jobs) admin tasks across servers.
  • Knowledge IP tables based firewalls to limit traffic and services but also be capable of configure interaction to external (hardware) firewalls
  • basic concepts of encryption at a administration level, and in particular, the way that public keys, private keys, and certificates are used on the implementation of certificates and SSL Configurations form MTA’s and Web Servers.
  • Troubleshoot development environments and related technologies ( SVN/Mercurial knowledge or troubleshoot a LAMP server install and configure a Tomcat or Jboss app servers) which is somewhat helpful

Experience
Minimum 3 years of Linux server experience.
